What are the revision schemes available for SOLIDWORKS files?

By Wayne White on

Tracking history of objects in a database is critical to all organizations. In 3DEXPERIENCE, there are several different objects (file types) that can live in a 3DSpace. For a detailed understanding of the differences between 3DSpace and 3DDrive, check out our recent blog article. The two most common starting objects would be a Document (possible Engineering Change Order) and a Physical Product (SOLIDWORKS objects). This post will focus on physical products, the objects coming out of SOLIDWORKS.

Setting the revision scheme for a tenant requires you to be a Platform Administrator. You may have as many Admins in your Platform as you like, but in most situations, it would be best to have one or two serving that function. As Platform Administrator, you may use the Platform Management Dashboard and you will want to navigate to the Content Tab, then select Revision Naming Rules.

Seen below is a representative view of the Platform Management Dashboard. Here, administrators can control most aspects of how the tenant (your 3DEXPERIENCE Platform) behaves.

When discussing objects (file types), it is also important to understand there is a difference between CAD objects and others. When SOLIDWORKS files are uploaded to 3DEXPERIENCE, the Name attribute would include a prefix “prd” followed by a counter. This is customizable, but the Name would be different from a Document; the prefix for that object would be DOC. Each object has a unique Name scheme and the scheme is configurable.

Seen below is an object in SOLIDWORKS along with their “Name” attribute as controlled by the Platform.

An item coming out of SOLIDWORKS is seen as a physical product by 3DEXPERIENCE.

The revision schemes possible today are seen below. It is important to note, that there is no use for us in the Cloud version of 3DEXPERIENCE for Development or Production. There is one revision scheme that you can follow for all objects coming from SOLIDWORKS.

Lifecycle and Collaboration allows the Platform administrator to control the behavior of the revision format, along with possible minor revisions. The settings will control whether major or minor revisioning occurs in the tenant.

It is important to point out the user can hover over the various options to get a more detailed understanding of its behavior as seen below.

Revision Options

While saving and sharing files from 3DSpace, revision options today include:

  1. Alphabetic
  • A to B to C
  • Option to avoid letters that look like numbers
  1. Numeric
  • 1 to 2 to 3
  • Option to start with 0
  1. Alpha Numeric
  • A.1 to B.1 to C.1
  1. Alpha Numeric with Minor Revisions (becoming popular)
  • A.1 to A.2 to A.3
  • After release, next revision would be B.1

In 3DEXPERIENCE, revision is an identity of the object and so if one releases A.3 of an object, this is the revision that shows released. There is no graduation to the next revision variable. Additional capabilities of the system allow to get any desired revision by using the convenient Revision Explorer interface, which is available in SOLIDWORKS and the web interface.

When deciding to use a data management solution, it is important to know what options are available for revisions. It is best to have a good handle on this before pushing large amounts of data up to the Platform, so those variables are set appropriately. For additional understanding, we have training courses available.
