New to SOLIDWORKS 2019 is the slicing tool which creates 2D sketch sections at the intersection of geometry and a reference plane. It’s extremely powerful because it can be used with traditional SOLIDWORKS geometry as well as mesh geometry and even graphics bodies.
What is Section Slice?
In this example, we showcase the tool using a model of a handle, which originated as mesh data. When you use SOLIDWORKS 2019 you’ll notice that it can open a wide variety of mesh data like the 3MF file without the need for an additional add-in, like scan to 3D. Traditionally, without a tool like scan to 3D or some other third-party application like Geomagic for SOLIDWORKS, a scanned model would be pretty useless. There wouldn’t be much you could do with it except look at it. But now with SOLIDWORKS 2019, there are tools available to you so you can work with mesh geometry.

The new slicing tool is available to create intersection sketches through the mesh body and to build solid models. It’s easy! Just pick a starting plane and then define the number of planes and offset. The slicing planes and sketches are organized in a folder and can be edited to position the sketches in the desired locations. Once the sketches are positioned, the mesh body can be hidden. These new sketches can be used like any other sketch to create a solid body. For example, a surface loft will be created to define the shape of the handle. The new slicing tool allows you to easily repurpose mesh data and even other imported geometry to create solid models.
