One of the most exciting new features of SOLIDWORKS 2019 is the addition of 3D textures. This new feature allows you to add complex and intricate geometry to your 3D CAD models in a few simple steps. 3D textures can add repeating geometric features to models in one simple step, such as dimples, knurls or textured patterns.

3D textures on a SOLIDWORKS designThis works because 3D textures transform appearances on parts into 3D geometry. Simply apply an appearance to a part or face and then adjust the size and orientation of the 3D texture. You use the resulting graphics body for manufacturing, especially 3D printing or you can even manipulate the geometry further by converting it into a mesh BREP body.

How it works

Start with your smooth, original model:

Then you want to apply a texture appearance:

Next, create a 3D texture from the 2D textural appearance:

And ta-da! You have your final model:

Imagine having to create that pattern using the techniques of past releases. The feature tree would have been full of features that were time-consuming to create. But now with SOLIDWORKS 2019, complex shapes can be created in a few simple steps using the new 3D texture tool.
