The Futureproof Engineer

By Caitlin Callaghan on

As technology continues to grow and change, so does the engineering field. Employers will be looking for new skill sets not previously expected in typical engineering positions. As these needs change, here are some things to look out for and add to your tool belt.

Adaptability is key

While engineers go to school focused on a specific discipline, the need for versatility is growing. Many smaller companies looking to hire engineers are not looking to take on several new employees to work towards their goals. This means when there is a problem to be solved, rather than a team of engineers from diverse backgrounds looking at the issue, there may only be one or two who must work to find the solution. When looking for the ideal engineer to hire, these companies are looking for adaptable workers who can solve problems relating to many different areas of engineering.

Additionally, a new aspect employers are looking for is engineers with certifications that supplement their degrees. These micro learning practices are growing in many industries and by taking the time to attain certifications in different areas, such as CAD (Computer-Aided Design) or PMP (Project Management Professional), you will set yourself apart from other candidates. The value that these certifications will add to you as a potential future employee comes in the form of a verification of skills, giving employers more confidence in the hiring process.

As the engineering field continues to change, the ability to adapt quickly will be a necessary skill in any position available. You must be willing to accept and embrace change. While it may be unsettling to watch the world move forward and direct its focus towards AI, a good engineer will adapt and find a new way to implement their skill set.

For Young Engineers

For those students leaving high school and preparing to enter the next stage of their life, a key factor in your future is the college or university you attend. Many institutions are known for being good schools for specific majors, engineering included, but the main attribute that employers are looking for is whether the school is ABET accredited.

ABET is a nonprofit, ISO 9001 certified organization that accredits college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology. This accreditation adds value, and for some employers it is a requirement to be considered for the job.

The certification a university receives though this accreditation tells employers that the coursework is measured to an international standard which gives a greater understanding of what can be expected from such graduates.

Key Takeaways

In the ever-changing world of engineering, to stay ahead of the curve the three main things you should focus on are versatility, certifications and the ability to adapt to changes. As technology continues to evolve and change quickly, it is important to be able to accept and adapt change.
