When it comes to creating sketches, we’re often looking for faster ways to do our daily tasks like editing or dimensioning. SOLIDWORKS gives us the power to speed those tasks through the Auto-Rotate and Numeric Screen Input system options. In this week’s Video Tech Tip, we will share with you how you can use them to speed up your sketching in SOLIDWORKS.
The first option includes the auto-rotate feature which allows any new sketch plane to auto-rotate so that it’s normal to the computer screen as well as making editing sketches easier. To turn this option on, let’s go to System Options > Sketch > Auto-rotate view normal to sketch plane on sketch creation and sketch edit.

The second option speeds up the dimensioning process. It will automatically add a dimension when creating sketch entities. This is found in System Options > Sketch > Enable on screen numeric input on entity creation. There’s also a secondary option that will allow dimensions to be added only if a value is added. This option is called Create dimension only when value is entered and is found in the same location.
