Sensors in Structural Simulation Apps on 3DEXPERIENCE Platform

To meet the growing demands of performing complex design validation anytime, anywhere, Dassault Systemes introduced 3DEXPERIENCE Simulia as a revolutionary platform, empowering its users with many advanced capabilities. In addition to the high-end analysis features and solver capabilities, it also provides many post-processing capabilities for those using 3DEXPERIENCE simulation. In this article we are going to discuss the different sensors in Structural Simulation apps on the 3DEXPEREINCE Platform.

Contour plots and isocontour plots are invaluable, however, when you want to extract the result at specific locations, you can probe by clicking on the plot itself.

The probe tool has its own limitations when it comes to saving the probed locations and the associated labels.  The sensor tool takes care of this by letting you create parameters from specific regions of interest, quantities, steps, frames, or load cases.

There are several types of sensors such as output sensors, resultant sensors, frequency sensors, buckle mode sensors, mass sensors, or strain gauge sensors to analyze simulation results. These sensors can be accessed by navigating to Action Bar in Simulia’s Physics Result Explorer app.

When using certain roles such as Structural Performance or Mechanics Engineer role, the Default sensors are automatically available to you after running a simulation. Similar to all other sensors, the default sensors automatically update their values when you rerun the simulation. The sensors display the minimum and maximum values recorded from all frames in the simulation. They do not provide history output or field output for specific supports in 3DEXPERIENCE simulation.

On the other hand, Output sensors allow you to track values from field output requests or from history output requests. Resultant sensors provide a summary of the resultant forces and moments at one or more locations in your simulation results.

Frequency Sensor enables you to create frequency parameters for each mode of selected frequencies.  The buckle mode sensor calculates eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors for the number of buckle modes specified prior to the analysis.

When defining sensors in 3DEXPERIENCE simulation, you can use predefined NodeSet or ElementSet, previously defined using Group option.

Another valuable type of sensor is the Strain Gauge Sensor that allows you measure stress and strain at specified locations on the surface of the structure.

Types of strain gauges offered are Stress, Strain from Strain, i.e., extrapolates strain from integration points and strain from displacement, which derives strain from nodal displacement.

You can also save the sensor data as a template file. These can be reused when you want to apply similar sensor definition for multiple steps.  These time saving tools can enable you to focus more on your product design validation to improve product performance and innovation.
