Enhancements Made To Part Modeling In SOLIDWORKS

By Stephen Petrock on

The SOLIDWORKS 2019 update included a lot of features that help improve either new or already existing tools, but with so many improvements it can be hard to keep track of them all. In this week’s Video Tech Tip, we’re going to go over some enhancements core to part modeling in SOLIDWORKS.

Design Workflow For Mesh Or Scanned Data Using Different Commands

Incorporating scanned and mesh data in our 3D designs has become more common. In this video, we look at a handle that originated as mesh data. With the new slicing tool included in SOLIDWORKS 2019, users can include slices in the mesh data. This new tool allows you to repurpose mesh data and other important geometry to create solid models.

In the second phase of this design workflow, we looked at the Split command, which allows the creation of two bodies split at the central plane. In this case, there was the need to apply a logo on each half, so we used the project curves, which now support opened or closed contours that can be projected unto multiple bodies. There is also a new bi-directional option that allows for the object to be projected in multiple directions. With SOLIDWORKS 2019, the logo was created in a single feature. Previously, this process would’ve taken multiple sketches and projected curves.

Another enhancement for working with surfaces is interference detection, which is now supported for multi-body parts. There are new ways to control the lengths of fillets and chamfers can be controlled through various options. This will help save an enormous amount of time.

As you can see, part modeling in SOLIDWORKS 2019 has gotten a lot better!
