Connecting SOLIDWORKS to the Cloud and Managing your Data

By Haley Huffman on

Data management is often the most overlooked but arguably one of the most important investments a company can make in their engineering department.  Approximately 85% of new product designs are leveraged from past designs, meaning efficiently managed data is essential for your engineering department’s productivity.  One option for efficiently managing your data is with the 3DEXPERIENCE Works. The 3DEXPERIENCE Works platform offers a cloud-based data management solution to connect SOLIDWORKS to the cloud in a convenient, flexible, cost-effective, and scalable manner.  Using 3DEXPERIENCE Works, you can connect SOLIDWORKS to the cloud and then store and manage your SOLIDWORKS data in said cloud.

In the video below, we will search for a document using the 6W tags in the 3DEXPERIENCE Works Add-in and then open it up in desktop SOLIDWORKS.

Connecting to the Cloud

You can connect your SOLIDWORKS data to the cloud using the 3DEXPERIENCE Works platform using the Collaborative Designer role for SOLIDWORKS.  This role allows you to use your existing SOLIDWORKS desktop installation but builds on it with an add-in that connects your existing data to the platform and leverages its built-in data management and collaboration cloud tools.  The Add-In serves as a connector between traditional SOLIDWORKS and the 3DEXPERIENCE Works platform.

Traditional Cloud based data management tools are not aimed towards CAD data meaning that references tend to get broken, and the tool ends up inducing more chaos than organization.  With the 3DEXPERIENCE Works platform, CAD data management is a strength rather than a limitation.  You can organize your data in collaborative spaces and drag files stored in the cloud from the add-in directly into your SOLIDWORKS workspace.  The platform allows you to store your data in what they call collaborative spaces which are analogous to shared drive or data vault.  Since the platform and SOLIDWORKS are connected you are left with a data management tool that keeps your references intact and seamlessly works.

In addition to being a more durable CAD focused file management solution, it also allows more extensive data searches using the search tool and 6W tags. 6W tags expand your search capabilities beyond just the file name to source, type, extension, modification date, description, file owner, or creation date.  These tags extend our data searching capabilities by allowing you to search for data by more characteristics than just the file name.

The add-in also gives you access to some document and revision control properties such as if it is the most recent revision, the maturity state the opened document is in, and the revision number.  The image below illustrates the document control properties that are easily seen when opening a document from the platform in desktop SOLIDWORKS.
