4 Tips for a Better Hiring Process

By Angie Droz on

The key to successful business leadership is a strong hiring process. But, it’s not an easy task. Hiring is a time-consuming and inexact art that can make or break your company. But don’t worry–using these four tips, you can drastically improve your hiring process.

1. Clearly define the role.

The first step in hiring someone qualified is to make sure you know exactly what those qualifications are. Write a very specific job description that includes: a clear explanation of duties, required education, required work experience, any certifications you’re looking for and both hard and soft skills. Use this description to guide your interview process.

2. Test your candidates.

Especially in the engineering and technical fields, it is important that candidates actually have the skills that they claim on their resume. Create a formalized skill test to use during the interview process and ask specific questions about their experiences.

Now, we know what you’re thinking; this takes time. And you’re right! That’s why we recommend partnering with staffing services who can help sift through candidates to find the right technical requirements of the position.

3. Improve your interview questions.

Keep your interview questions relevant. Your interview questions should focus on the specifics of a candidate’s ability to fill the role and fit into the culture—ask about relevant experience, skills related to the job and personal skills that will make them a great fit for your team. Avoid asking questions like, “If you could be any animal what would you be and why?” This tells you very little about the candidate’s qualifications.

4. Encourage candidates to ask you questions, too.

By allowing a candidate to interview you as well, you can easily see what’s important to them. This will also give the candidate a chance to determine if you’re the right fit for them. Be honest about your work environment and company cutlture.
